Antisemitic incidents show Britain has ‘changed in a very fundamental way’

The recent spate of antisemitic incidents shows that Britain has changed in a “very fundamental way”, a former Labour MP says.

Dame Louise Ellman, joint independent chair of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, told Sky News she is “extremely concerned” about the situation, following yesterday’s attack in Golders Green.

She said:

“I feel like many members of the Jewish community that things have changed here in a very fundamental way.

“That we’re not people who ever give up, but something has changed very much in our nation.”

She added: “I feel extremely concerned and very nervous about what lies in front of us.”

Ellman said the government’s statements condemning the incident were welcome but “nowhere near enough”.

We need to look at the causes of this,” she said.

“We need to look at stopping incitement, to look at the proxies, the people who organise the destruction on our streets, the source of hatred and incitement, and to look specifically at Islamic incitement and see just what is happening within our communities.”
