Julian Alvarez had admitted he has told Atletico Madrid he would like to transfer away to the club to “fulfil my dream” with a huge-money move to Real Madrid now a step closer.
The Argentina forward is a summer transfer target for Atletico’s capital neighbours – and the subject of a spat between the two clubs earlier in June.
Real Madrid issued a statement saying Atletico had rejected a £129m (€150m) bid for Alvarez – and Atletico hit back by posting on social media: “You make us laugh even more than Barcelona”.
At the time, Atletico also said they would not consider any offer for their striker, who is contracted until 2030.
But Alvarez, who is at the World Cup, has now told ESPN: “I can’t hide it. I try to be an honest person. I spoke with Atletico de Madrid, and I think a transfer is the best option. I want to fulfil my dream.”
