Explosions heard near Syrian capital
Several explosions have been heard near a shrine on the outskirts of Damascus, the Syrian capital, according to reports.
Local news outlet Sham FM and one witness cited by Reuters reported multiple explosions at the Sayyeda Zeinab complex, but we’ve had no comment from the Syrian authorities yet.
Reuters says a source inside Iran’s regional alliance claimed a strike had hit a location near the city used by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps, but this is unconfirmed.
Joe Biden yesterday accused “radical Iran-backed militant groups operating in Syria and Iraq” of carrying out an attack on a US base in Jordan, which killed three American service members.
Iran backs, funds, and trains several proxy groups across the Middle East region, including Hamas in Gaza, the Houthis in Yemen, Hezbollah in Lebanon and a number of other factions in Syria and Iraq.
