A five-year-old girl was killed after gunfire was directed at the vehicle carrying her, her mother and four siblings in northwest Harris County, Texas.

The child, identified as Zah’Layah Walter, was fatally wounded during the shooting late Saturday night. Two of her siblings also suffered non-life-threatening injuries from shattered glass, according to authorities.

Mother Was Driving Home With Five Children

Zah’Layah was travelling with her mother, Monica Hicks, and her four siblings when shots were fired at their vehicle around 11:30 p.m. near Grant Road and Jones Road.

Hicks told investigators and local media that she was returning home from her mother’s house when the shooting occurred. She said she initially did not realise that the sounds she heard were gunshots.

According to reports, Hicks stopped the vehicle after her children began screaming and discovered that Zah’Layah was seriously injured. Emergency responders attempted to save the child before she was taken by helicopter to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The two other children injured in the incident were hurt by broken glass and their injuries were not considered life-threatening. Hicks herself was not physically injured.

Authorities Initially Described It as Road Rage

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said the shooting appeared to have stemmed from a road-rage incident, although investigators continued working to establish exactly what happened.

Hicks, however, disputed the road-rage characterization. She told ABC13 that she did not believe she had cut off another vehicle or exchanged words with another driver before the shooting. She also said she had not noticed the vehicle from which the shots were fired.

The difference between the investigators’ initial description and Hicks’ account has left the circumstances surrounding the shooting under further investigation.

Suspect Charged With Capital Murder

Authorities arrested 47-year-old Jeremy Porter in connection with Zah’Layah’s death and charged him with capital murder.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez announced that Porter had been taken into custody less than 24 hours after the shooting. Investigators credited automated license plate reader technology with helping detectives develop information that led them to the suspect.

Porter remains in custody while the investigation and criminal proceedings continue. The capital-murder charge is an allegation, and the case remains subject to the judicial process.

Sheriff Offers Condolences to Family

Sheriff Gonzalez expressed sympathy for Zah’Layah’s relatives following the child’s death.

“Our hearts remain with Zah’Layah’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” Gonzalez said in a statement.

He also highlighted the role of automated license plate readers in the investigation.

“Technology cannot replace good police work, but tools like license plate readers can give investigators valuable information when every minute matters,” the sheriff said.

Family Says Shooting Was Not Provoked

Hicks has maintained that there was no confrontation with another driver before the shooting. Her account indicates that the family was simply travelling home when their vehicle came under fire.

According to her account, the family did not engage in an argument or exchange words with anyone before the shots were fired. Investigators have not publicly established that Hicks or anyone in her vehicle initiated a confrontation.

The investigation therefore remains focused on determining what led to the shooting and why the family’s vehicle was targeted.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the shooting while Porter faces the capital-murder charge.

The case has drawn attention because of the age of the victim and the fact that she was travelling with her mother and siblings when the gunfire occurred. The two surviving children who were injured were treated for injuries caused by shattered glass.

Zah’Layah’s death has left her family mourning while investigators work to establish the complete sequence of events that led to the shooting.
