Mike Dargas is a German realistic painter who’s known for using sketches and oil colors in expressing his talents. He admits getting inspiration from works by Dali, Caravaggio and HR Giga after which begins to focus on surrealism and realism.
His works show the picture of people, painted realistically in oil on canvas. The precise technique gives, like a photography, a snapshot of the moment.
The artist studies his motifs with such intensity, that each portrait pictures a profile of increasing intimate closeness.
In his portraits, Mike is not limited on certain types. He portrays young and old, beautiful and dark, fragile and strong people. They are lost in thoughts, show inner conflicts or transmit a unique or even holy calmness. The perfection of his technique seems to seek for the perfect image, like he was searching for the soul within each single one.
With his works Mike Dargas challenges us to take a deeper look, to understand the nature of human being and to question our own emotional perception.
The artist lives and works in Cologne, Germany.
Mike was invited for an interview during which he introduced himself and talked about his work. He said: “I have never studied at an art school, I just started painting at the age of 3. My mother told me, she noticed my artistic talent very early, when I drew my first sketches. After kindergarten I started using oil colors. I guess I was 7 or 8 years old when the first piece was sold to a friend of the family.
“My hometown Cologne is well-known for the Dome, an ancient cathedral that lies in the heart of the City. It’s a touristic area and artists have been presenting their skills in front of the cathedral for decades already.
“One day, I must have been 10, I packed my drawing equipment went to the cathedral and started to draw pieces of the Old Masters with crayons. I was a shy guy at the time but it was an inner wish to paint among all the other artists.
“Later I had my own tattoo studio for 14 years to do my living until I decided to become an artist. Today I paint large realistic portraits in oil.
“I love to work on light reflections and color grading and use photographic characteristics to underline the realistic effect.
