Would UK govt comply with arrest warrant for Netanyahu?

Away from the chancellor’s appearance at the CBI, former home secretary Priti Patel is asking an urgent question in parliament.

She asks for the government’s response to the decision taken by the International Criminal Court (ICC) to issue arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, his ex-defence secretary Yoav Gallant and senior Hamas commander Mohammed Diab Ibrahim al Masri.

‘This process has never been tested’

In response, Labour’s Hamish Falconer says “the government will comply with our international obligations”.

“There is a domestic and legal process through our independent courts that determines whether to endorse an arrest warrant by the ICC,” he says.

“This process has never been tested because the UK has never been visited by an ICC indictee.”

Mr Falconer says “Israel has a right to defend itself in accordance with international law”.

“That right is not under question and the court’s approval of the warrants approval last week do not change that,” he adds.

The minister also adds that “the need to bring an immediate ceasefire” in the conflict is “upmost in the government’s minds”.
