A 78 year-old woman has been airlifted to hospital in Plymouth after her arm was ripped off in a bizarre accident. The window of her electric car was responsible for the amputation which occurred around 4pm yesterday.

Emergency services were called to a bungalow on Penmare Close, Hayle, following the “life-changing” incident which ended with the pensioner’s right arm being severed at the elbow.

A Devon and Cornwall police spokesman said: “What appears to have happened is that she has lent into the car to close the electric windows.

“She then turned on the ignition to get the power to turn the electric windows to close but unfortunately the car was in gear and the car has lurched forward trapping her hand/arm.

“In the process of doing that it has taken her arm off.”

Surgeons say they hope to reattach the severed arm after retrieving it from the scene.

There’s hope that she will make a good recovery, cops said.
