Will families accept Johnson’s apology over COVID-19 error?

For the bereaved families attending the hearing and beyond, a lot hangs on the manner of Boris Johnson’s apology as well as the fact of it.

In the inquiry room he apologised just for their experience of COVID – their “pain, loss and suffering”.

In a section of his witness statement – which we will only see in full at the conclusion of his evidence – he goes further, saying: “We – I – unquestionably made mistakes”.

But Johnson, who has been preparing for this inquiry for months, squirms when asked exactly what these were.

Those working closely with him, say he’s adamant that the key decisions were right, and that the scientific evidence was not clear cut towards lockdown earlier in 2020,

But those hoping for something more fulsome from Johnson, as we have seen from Dominic Cummings and Michael Gove, will be disappointed.
