The chances are greater now, certainly than they were a couple of weeks ago, but there’s another candidate for Karim Benzema’s signature as well in Lyon, the Ligue 1 club where the France international footballer started his career.
I think footballers, not only Benzema, have always dreamt of a potential return, but never really thought there might be an opportunity to do so. That opportunity is very much real for them now and it’s something they are trying their best to explore.
The situation with Benzema has really accelerated over the past 48 hours or so and he’s now looking at potential short-term solutions, with his relationship with his Saudi employers at Al Ittihad deteriorating. It presented this interesting opportunity to a number of European clubs.
There are huge financial difficulties to overcome in potentially signing a player of Benzema’s caliber and also of his salary, given the wages he’s been on since his move.
It’s an opportunity a number of Premier League clubs have looked into, but one that Lyon feel they can be in the driving seat for, given Benzema’s strong emotional ties to the club and the fact they are in a desperate situation at the moment, trying to improve their position in the French top flight, which is something Benzema might like, in terms of a challenge between now and the end of the season.
