Why Sri Lankan navy arrested Indian fishermen

The Sri Lankan navy seized an Indian trawler and apprehended four Indian fishermen poaching in Sri Lankan waters off Jaffna in the north of the country on Tuesday morning, the navy said in a press release.

These arrests were made when the Sri Lankan navy conducted an operation to chase away Indian poaching trawlers from Sri Lankan waters, the navy said.

The seized trawler and the fishermen will be handed over to the Mailadi Fisheries Inspector for legal proceedings, the navy said.

The navy has seized a total of 24 Indian poaching trawlers and 182 Indian fishermen in Sri Lankan waters in 2024, it said.
