A World Health Organisation official said they are receiving estimates that 1,000 bodies are still stuck under the rubble in Gaza and are yet to be identified.
They’re not included in death figures provided by the Hamas-run health ministry, the official said.
“We also get these estimates that there are still 1,000 plus people under the rubble which have not been identified yet,” said Richard Peeperkorn, WHO representative for the occupied Palestinian territory.
He was responding to a question about the number of people killed in Gaza. According to the Hamas-led ministry, more than 7,000 Palestinians have died in Israeli airstrikes since 7 October.
‘Let’s pray for peace’: London mayor calls for ceasefire
Sadiq Khan has called for a ceasefire in the conflict and an end to the killing of civilians.
The mayor of London said significant military escalation is likely and would only serve to “deepen the humanitarian disaster” in Gaza.
“I join the international community in calling for a ceasefire,” he said in a video posted to X.
