Sir Keir Starmer has “utterly condemned” Iran’s attempt “to harm innocent Israelis” and “push the region ever-closer to the brink”.
He says: “We stand with Israel, and recognise her right to self-defence in the face of this aggression.
“Iran must stop these attacks, together with its proxies like Hezbollah.”
The prime minister adds: “We support Israel’s reasonable demand for the security of its people.”
Sir Keir says he is “deeply concerned” that the Middle East is “on the brink”.
“I am deeply concerned about the risk of miscalculation.”
The prime minister says the situation in Lebanon is “grave”, urging British nationals in the area to leave immediately.
“If you have the means to leave, the time is now.”
Taking questions from the media, Sir Keir is asked if the UK is prepared to use British military capacities to help Israel’s defence.
The prime minister avoids the question, saying this is an “evolving situation” and repeating the UK “stands with Israel”.
