The senior adviser to Benjamin Netanyahu has repeated the Israeli military’s claim that a rocket fired by Palestinian Islamic Jihad is most likely to blame for the hospital strike in Gaza.
“The statistics are clear,” Mark Regev told Sky News.
“In past rounds of fighting, some 33% of Islamic Jihad rockets fired at Israel fell short and landed in Gaza.
“Our intelligence is reporting to us that there was Islamic Jihad fire over the vicinity of the hospital and apparently a rocket malfunctioned and hit the hospital.
“We had a documented case of this in the last round of fighting in 2021 where everyone said Israel had hit a target and killed an innocent family.
“In the end we could prove with a video that it was their rocket that was launched and we saw the rocket land.”
He added: “In Gaza there is no independent civil society, Hamas has ruled there for 16 years. All the voices that you interview will say ‘Israel, Israel, Israel’ because that is the party line.
“I urge caution and for people to think before rushing to judgement. We don’t think it’s us, we are still looking, of course, but we don’t believe it was us and all the evidence points towards a rocket attack by Hamas’s younger brother Islamic Jihad.
“We do not target hospitals. Israel is very clear about that.”
