Diplomatic Storm: Trump Upends NATO Summit with Greenland Demands and Trade Threats
President Donald Trump threw the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, into disarray on Wednesday as he revived his push for U.S. control over Greenland, ordered an immediate halt to all trade with Spain, and declared the U.S.-Iran ceasefire “over”.
Speaking in the Turkish capital, Trump called Madrid a “terrible partner” in NATO and instructed Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to cut off all trade with Spain. The move came after Spain reportedly refused to meet NATO’s new 5% GDP defense spending target and declined to allow the U.S. to use its territory or airspace during the Iran war. Trump also renewed his claims over Greenland, arguing the Arctic island is “very important” for the United States but “not important for Denmark”. The most consequential development came as Trump declared the U.S.-Iran ceasefire agreement effectively terminated. “I don’t want to deal with them anymore,” Trump said, characterizing negotiations with Iranian officials as a “waste of time”.
The escalation followed overnight U.S. military strikes on approximately 80 targets in southern Iran. According to U.S. defense officials, the strikes targeted underground facilities used for storing drones and missiles, coastal defense positions, radar stations, and monitoring centers — a direct response to Iranian attacks on three commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.

Financial markets reacted sharply to Trump’s ceasefire declaration. U.S. stock futures tumbled, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropping approximately 600 to 800 points. The S&P 500 fell 0.91%, while the Nasdaq also declined.
Oil prices soared. Brent crude climbed more than 8% to top $80 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate jumped nearly 8% to around $76 a barrel. Diesel futures surged more than 13% as traders braced for tighter refined-product supply.
Energy stocks gained in premarket trading: Chevron rose 2.4%, Exxon Mobil gained 3%, and ConocoPhillips advanced 2.2%.
Domestic Politics: Voting Rights, Crypto, and Tech Regulation
On the domestic front, the Justice Department sent letters to all 50 states and the District of Columbia on Wednesday warning that state officials could face criminal prosecution if they allow non-citizens to vote. The move drew sharp rebukes from election officials. Utah Lieutenant Governor Deidre Henderson called it a “sprinkled with threats of criminal prosecution” letter, while Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes described the threat as “an insult to our county recorders’ office staff”.
In tech regulation, Meta Platforms faces a staggering $1.4 trillion penalty request from four states, which allege the company deliberately designed Facebook and Instagram to addict young users and misled the public on safety issues. The case is scheduled to open in Oakland, California, next month.
On the political funding front, federal disclosure filings revealed that Trump personally profited approximately $1.2 billion from cryptocurrency projects last year. A poll by the Progressive Policy Institute and GBAO found that 83% of voters want cryptocurrency companies to follow the same anti-money laundering reporting rules as banks, and 71% want to ban federal officials and their families from promoting or profiting from cryptocurrencies.

A new “heat dome” is set to roast the western United States starting this weekend, with temperatures expected to run 10 to 15 degrees Fahrenheit above normal. The National Weather Service has issued excessive heat warnings for the Tucson area, with forecasts reaching 107 to 111 degrees Fahrenheit. Las Vegas is experiencing its hottest week of the year, with highs reaching at least 110 degrees through the weekend.

The Storm Prediction Center issued a “slight risk” (Level 2 of 5) warning for southeastern Wyoming, northeastern Colorado, northern Kansas, most of Nebraska, nearly all of Iowa, and south-central Wisconsin. Primary threats include damaging winds of 60 to 70 mph, large hail, and possible isolated tornadoes.
