COURT

US woman to divorce husband for allegedly sleeping with a Minneapolis Democrat

A Washington, D.C.-based physician is claiming in a divorce filing that her husband had an extramarital affair with U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar, a Minneapolis Democrat serving her first term in Congress.

Dr. Beth Mynett, 55, made the allegations in divorce proceedings filed Tuesday against 38-year-old Tim Mynett in District of Columbia Superior Court. She claims her husband, a political consultant for Omar’s campaign, admitted to the affair in early April.

They have since been separated.

Federal campaign finance records reviewed by the Star Tribune show Omar’s campaign paid almost $160,000 to Tim Mynett’s firm, E Street Group, in the first half of 2019.

According to the divorce filing, Tim Mynett made a “shocking declaration of love” for Omar before deciding to leave his wife, the New York Post reports.

Tim and Beth Mynett have a 13-year-old son. Beth Mynett is petitioning for primary custody of the boy, Minnesota Pubic Radio reports, claiming her husband has only “sporadic” involvement with him.

The divorce filing also states that Tim Mynett’s “more recent travel and long work hours now appear to be more related to his affair with Rep. Omar than his actual work commitments.”

Omar is married to Ahmed Hirsi. Together, they have three children in Minneapolis. A spokesperson for Omar declined to comment for the Star Tribune Tuesday.
