US buying decommissioned HAWK missiles from Taiwan for Ukraine

The US is planning to repurchase decommissioned HAWK air defence missiles it sold to Taiwan and redirect them to Ukraine as part of a military aid package, according to the China Times.

Citing unnamed sources, the paper claims Washington and Taipei agreed on the repurchase after consultations with senior security officials as early as last year.

The transfer is set to be carried carried out under the $2.1bn (£1.6bn) defence aid package announced by the US on 9 June.

The MIM-23 HAWK is an American medium-range surface-to-air missile system developed by Raytheon.

It entered service in 1960 and is still being used by Egypt, Greece, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Sweden, and other countries.

The Ukrainian military has also used HAWK air defence systems provided by Spain.

In January, the US reportedly asked the Israeli government to transfer its old Hawk anti-aircraft missiles in storage to Ukraine, but Israel declined.

  1. War is the other name for peace. Most people and countries would never know their limits until they’re pushed to the brink of extinction. For the US lending support to Ukraine, it’s fine because they’re the prey, the minority, and the “less-privileged.” They need the world on their side, God too.

I stand against war. Global leaders should find a lasting solution to wars. It’s always the poor masses that suffer more devastating pains from wars.

  3. Peace is better than war. We should embrace peace at all costs, excluding war.

  4. US must show a stronger support to nations that are agitating for the right to live and decide their own matters. Russia is biting more than it can chew. I’m still laughing at how long it has taken to destroy Ukraine. Putin didn’t see this coming at all.

  5. They want war so we say “give them war and more bloodsheds.”

  6. War is an alternative to peace. When people can live in peace with others, they certainly need war to forcefully embrace peace and do what is right.

  7. These wars must be fought for leaders to maintain their status quo. In fact, the wars favour super powers. Haven’t we learned something since the Cold War?
