Unexploded WW2 Bomb: Lessons learned from today’s event in Plymouth

Unexploded bombs still pose a risk nearly 90 years on

Today’s event shows unexploded Second World War bombs still pose a risk, a bomb expert has said.

An estimated 10% of bombs dropped on the UK by the Germans failed to detonate properly, said Lucie Tiverrier, director of unexploded ordnance at infrastructure company Igne.

“When I explain what I do for work… the question I get constantly is, is there really still a risk?

“And this story today is really showing that there is.”

Asked what people should do if they think they’ve discovered an unexploded bomb, Ms Tiverrier says: ” Stop what you’re doing. Call the authority. Don’t touch it, don’t interact and let the experts deal with it.

“If there is an item of metal consistency and you don’t know what it is, don’t take a chance. It’s not worth it.”
