UN Deputy Chief Amina Mohammed Rules Out Bid for Next Secretary-General Position

UNITED NATIONS, July 7 — United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed has dismissed speculation that she is seeking to become the next UN secretary-general, saying she is not a candidate for the position.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Mohammed rejected claims that she was involved in behind-the-scenes efforts to promote her candidacy. “I’m not a candidate for secretary-general of the United Nations,” she said, while denying that there were “backdoor meetings” to advocate for her candidacy.

Mohammed said she has no plans to pursue the role, describing the position of UN secretary-general as a major responsibility. She added that working alongside current Secretary-General Antonio Guterres for nearly a decade had been a source of pride and humility.

“So let me finish the job that I’ve been given, and then I have a much, much, I think, more attractive job at home in Nigeria, in Africa,” Mohammed said.

She also expressed support for the principle of regional rotation in selecting the UN’s top official, saying that Latin America and the Caribbean could put forward a woman candidate for the position.

At present, six candidates are competing for the next secretary-general role, including four women from Latin America and the Caribbean. The term of the current UN secretary-general is scheduled to end at the close of this year.
