UMKC Student Health Services Seeks Registered Nurse, with Pay of US$30 to US$34 Per Hour

UMKC Student Health Services is seeking a collaborative and student-centered Registered Nurse to join its interdisciplinary outpatient health care team. The full-time position pays US$30 to US$34 per hour, and applications will be accepted until filled.

The RN supports the health and academic success of a diverse university population by providing ambulatory nursing care, clinical triage, immunizations, medication administration, point-of-care testing, specimen collection, health screening, care coordination and student health education. The RN works closely with nurse practitioners, medical assistants, administrative staff, and campus and community partners to provide timely, evidence-based, developmentally appropriate care. The position also plays an important role in communicable disease prevention and response, tuberculosis and immunization compliance, clinical quality improvement, supply and vaccine management, and outreach initiatives that promote student well-being.

The role is described as well suited for an RN who enjoys developing meaningful relationships with patients, working collaboratively within a small clinical team, practising with a high degree of professional judgment, and contributing to both individual patient care and the health of the broader campus community. Nurses have the opportunity to practise across the continuum of ambulatory care—from triage and direct clinical nursing to preventive health, immunization, student education, care coordination and campus health initiatives—and, as part of a small interdisciplinary team, have an active voice in improving clinical workflows and developing programmes that directly affect the health, well-being and academic success of UMKC students.

Key responsibilities fall under four areas. In clinical nursing care and triage, the RN provides professional ambulatory nursing care to university students within RN scope of practice and established protocols; performs in-person and telephone or portal triage, assessing symptoms and clinical urgency, providing nursing guidance and facilitating timely evaluation by a medical provider or higher level of care when indicated; obtains focused nursing histories, vital signs, clinical assessments and other information needed to support evaluation and treatment; administers medications, injections, immunisations and other treatments pursuant to provider orders, standing orders and approved protocols; performs or assists with point-of-care testing, phlebotomy, specimen collection and processing, wound care and other outpatient nursing procedures; provides patient education on diagnoses, medications, treatment plans, preventive health, follow-up care and indications for urgent or emergency evaluation; and communicates abnormal or time-sensitive results and coordinates follow-up per established protocols.

In compliance and population health, the RN supports university tuberculosis and immunisation compliance programmes, including review of health records, administration of vaccines and TB testing, student education, documentation and appropriate clinical follow-up; participates in communicable disease prevention, surveillance, exposure management and outbreak response in collaboration with Student Health Services leadership and appropriate university and public-health partners; maintains current knowledge of applicable CDC, state, university and professional recommendations related to immunisation and communicable disease prevention; and assists with vaccine inventory management, storage and handling, temperature monitoring, documentation, forecasting and regulatory compliance.

In care coordination and resource navigation, the RN coordinates referrals, diagnostic testing, prescriptions, follow-up care and communication with outside health care organisations when appropriate; assists students in navigating health care resources and overcoming barriers to obtaining recommended care; collaborates with medical providers, behavioural health professionals, campus partners, pharmacies, laboratories, public health agencies and community health organisations as appropriate; and recognises students with complex medical, behavioural, social or safety needs and facilitates appropriate escalation and multidisciplinary support.

In clinic operations and quality, the RN supports daily clinic flow and collaborates with providers and clinical support staff to promote efficient, timely patient care; maintains accurate and timely documentation in the electronic health record; assists with development, implementation and evaluation of clinical protocols, standing orders, workflows and nursing procedures; participates in quality improvement, patient safety, infection prevention, emergency preparedness and regulatory and compliance activities; monitors clinical supplies and medications and assists with inventory management, ordering, expiration monitoring and appropriate storage; and participates in orientation, competency development and clinical support of nursing and medical assistant staff and student employees as appropriate. The RN also participates in outreach, health promotion, orientation, immunisation and compliance events and other campus initiatives; provides evidence-based health education addressing preventive health and health concerns relevant to university students; and collaborates with campus partners to support a culture in which health and well-being contribute to student success.

Minimum qualifications are completion of an approved nursing program and licensure, or eligibility to be licensed, as an RN within the state of Missouri.

Preferred qualifications include two or more years of professional Registered Nurse experience; experience in ambulatory care and/or public health, occupational health or college/university health; experience with telephone or in-person clinical triage; experience administering immunisations and performing injections, phlebotomy, specimen collection, point-of-care testing and other ambulatory nursing procedures; knowledge of immunisation practices, vaccine storage and handling, and tuberculosis screening and testing; experience using an electronic health record and electronic patient communication systems; experience with care coordination, patient education, health promotion or population-health initiatives; demonstrated ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within an interdisciplinary team; strong organisational skills and ability to prioritise competing clinical needs in a fast-paced outpatient environment; experience working with adolescents, young adults, university populations or individuals from diverse backgrounds and life experiences; and interest in quality improvement, workflow development and evidence-based clinical practice.

Salary is determined by a variety of factors including, but not limited to, the individual’s particular combination of education, skills and experience, as well as organisational requirements. The grade is GGS009 and the university title is Staff Nurse; internal applicants can determine their university title by accessing the Talent Profile tile in myHR.

Application materials must include a cover letter and updated resume or CV. Application review will begin immediately, and applications will continue to be accepted until filled. Employment visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
