Ukraine restricts civilian movement in Sumy amid intensifying Kursk invasion

Ukraine’s general staff has imposed restrictions on the movement of civilians in the Sumy region due to an “increase in the intensity of hostilities”.

The military command is imposing restrictions on all citizens within 20km of the Russian border.

A statement by the general staff said only those with Ukrainian passports showing they reside in Sumy will be admitted to the area.

Today marks a week since Ukraine invaded the Kursk region – when around 1,000 Ukrainian troops surprised analysts by storming across the border and rapidly gaining territory.

We reported earlier that a source had indicated the assault was to create a buffer zone inside Russian territory.

That would help better protect the the communities who live in Sumy and Kharkiv regions – which have faced heavy bombardment from Russian forces on the other side of the border.
