Shadow environment secretary Jim McMahon has confirmed he is stepping down from his role in Sir Keir Starmer’s shadow cabinet, as a Labour Party reshuffle begins.
In a lengthy letter to Sir Keir, Mr McMahon said he has faced “a number of personal challenges in the last year coming back from a serious illness”.
He said: “I am particularly proud of the work my staff and I have done on the water industry, uncovering the full extent of the Tory sewage scandal, including holding Liz Truss to account for her appalling record as environment secretary, as well as advancing the first phase of Labour’s plan to end the Tory sewage scandal by 2030.”

In response, Sir Keir said: “I understand the reasons for your decision.
“I know that you have faced a number of personal challenges in addition to your frontbench work and that these have taken a personal toll.
“MPs should never have to deal with abuse or violent threats, and I can appreciate how difficult this must have been for you and your family.
“You have always risen above this and remained focused on the principles that brought you into politics.”
