UK Home Secretary: We must change the rules of engagement

Cleverly mulls change to protest rules and announces funding to protect MPs

The home secretary has said the government is considering changing protest rules following regular pro-Palestinian demonstrations.

Protest organisers could be required to give more than the currently mandated six days of notice to police due to “unsustainable pressure” on policing resources, James Cleverly told The Times.

Mr Cleverly also announced a £31m security package for MP safety, including providing dedicated police contacts.

The funding comes in response to fears about MPs being targeted and intimidated by demonstrators in recent months, particularly by those demanding action to bring an end to the fighting in the Israel-Hamas war.

Hostage families begin four-day march to Jerusalem

The families of hostages held in Gaza have begun a four-day march from southern Israel to Jerusalem demanding their loved ones be set free.

The relatives and their supporters have for weeks been calling on the Netanyahu administration to do more to prioritise the captives’ release, with some demanding his resignation.

Negotiations are underway in Qatar to bring about a deal, including a ceasefire, with the US and Egypt also taking part.

Joe Biden said an agreement was at hand, but officials from Israel and Hamas were sceptical of his optimism.

The framework would see some hostages freed in exchange for Palestinian prisoners and a six-week halt in fighting.
