The weekend saw another devastating incident of violence make headlines, as two teenage boys were killed in a stabbing attack in Bristol.
The pair, named locally as Max Dixon, 16, and Mason Rist, 15, were attacked on Saturday night.
Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has described the stabbings as “devastating”, adding he “cannot even imagine what it’s like” for the victims’ families and friends.
He said “across the country” there is a sense that “crime is getting out of control” and “real ambition by the government” is needed to tackle it.
‘We can’t carry on with these awful stories’
Sir Keir said ministers should “make sure these knives are not available online – that can be done very quickly”.
He added: “Where we think that youngsters are getting into trouble, put the support and get them out of that situation in the first place.
“And then finally, make it absolutely clear that if you carry a knife you carry the consequences.
“So I would bring a laser focus to this now. We can’t carry on with these awful stories of knife crime.
“We have to roll up our sleeves and do something about it.”
