UK Foreign Secretary: Iran cannot be allowed to just ‘hold the global economy hostage’

The foreign secretary has said the UK is “deeply concerned about the links between Russia and Iran”, and also said the latter cannot “hold the global economy hostage”.

Speaking on arrival at a G7 foreign ministers summit in Paris, Yvette Cooper said Iran has provided drones to Russia for the war in Ukraine, and there has been support the other way round as well.

“That is why I think as G7 countries, we have a shared interest in coming together to discuss these issues and the way that we need to protect our global economy from countries that want to weaponise our economy against us,” she said.

Copper called for a “swift resolution” to the conflict in Iran that sees the Strait of Hormuz reopen, with “protection for international shipping”.

She said: “What we need is that partnership – including the diplomacy, including some of the discussions that we will have today – because frankly, Iran cannot be able to just hold the global economy hostage as a result of a Strait which is about international shipping routes and the freedom of navigation that has been so strongly supported at the United Nations, but also by countries across the world.”
