Uganda Declares End of Latest Ebola Outbreak

Uganda has officially declared the end of its latest Ebola outbreak after completing the mandatory 42-day monitoring period without recording any new infections.

Health Minister Dr. Chris Baryomunsi announced the milestone, saying the country had successfully contained the outbreak through surveillance, contact tracing and coordinated public health measures. The outbreak recorded 20 confirmed cases, including two fatalities, before being brought under control.

The government said nationwide surveillance would continue to ensure any future cases are detected quickly.

Government Begins Emergency Food Distribution in Karamoja

The Ugandan government has begun distributing emergency food relief to thousands of households affected by prolonged drought in the Karamoja sub-region.

The intervention follows reports that at least 19 people have died as food shortages worsened after months of below-average rainfall. Authorities say more than one million people have been affected by crop failures and increasing malnutrition.

State Minister for Relief, Disaster Preparedness and Refugees, Sam Engola, pledged that “no one will be left behind” as the relief operation continues across the affected districts.

Public Holiday Observed for Local Council Elections

Uganda observed a public holiday on Tuesday to allow citizens to participate in Local Council elections across the country.

Polling was conducted for Local Council I leadership positions, with electoral authorities urging voters to participate peacefully and follow electoral guidelines.

Security agencies maintained a presence at polling stations while election officials monitored voting throughout the day.

Government Maintains Disease Surveillance

Although the Ebola outbreak has officially ended, health authorities have emphasized that surveillance systems remain active nationwide.

Officials say Uganda’s experience in responding to previous Ebola outbreaks has strengthened the country’s emergency preparedness, laboratory capacity and rapid response mechanisms.

Health workers have also been encouraged to remain vigilant, particularly in border districts where cross-border movement remains significant.

Uganda Continues Preparations for AFCON 2027

Uganda continues preparations to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations alongside Kenya and Tanzania.

Infrastructure projects, including stadium upgrades and transport improvements, remain underway as the three East African nations work toward meeting hosting requirements.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has expressed confidence that the tournament will be successfully staged despite ongoing construction challenges.

Government Pushes Forward With Development Agenda

Government agencies continue implementing programmes aimed at accelerating progress toward Uganda’s Sustainable Development Goals.

Officials have emphasized the importance of stronger partnerships, sustainable financing, improved data collection and effective monitoring as Uganda works toward achieving its national development targets before 2030.

Tourism Sector Eyes Continued Growth

Uganda’s tourism industry remains optimistic following a strong increase in international visitor arrivals earlier this year.

Tourism stakeholders say the official declaration ending the Ebola outbreak is expected to boost traveller confidence and support further recovery in the sector, which remains an important contributor to the national economy.
