WASHINGTON, July 7 — The United States military carried out a new series of strikes against Iran on Tuesday after attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz intensified security concerns and raised fears of a broader escalation in the region.

The U.S. action followed a series of attacks on merchant ships traveling through the strategic waterway, including incidents involving vessels linked to Saudi Arabia, Qatar and other commercial operators. The attacks prompted officials to increase the maritime threat level in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy shipping routes.
