Donald Trump was asked a short time ago about reports that JD Vance, his vice president, is leading talks with Iran.
In response, the US leader says Vance is “involved” but names others who are also taking part.
Readers of our Ukraine blog will recognise some of the names who also lead the negotiations with Kyiv and Moscow.
Trump says the others involved are:
- His son-in-law Jared Kushner,
- His special envoy Steve Witkoff
- US secretary of states Marco Rubio
Trump also said he was “involved”.
‘We’ve won this war’, Trump claims – and rails against media
Donald Trump has told the reporters assembled in the White House:
“We’ve won this war. This war has been won.”
He made the comments before going on to criticise what he describes as “fake news”, naming The New York Times, our US partner NBC News and ABC News.
The US president adds:
“You read the New York Times, it’s like we’re not winning a war where they [Iran] have no navy and they have no air force, and they have no nothing. And we literally have planes flying over Tehran and other parts of their country. They can’t do a thing about it.”
Trump claims that if he wanted to take down something like “that very big powerful power plant” – which he previously threatened to do – “they can’t do a thing about it”.
He finishes the questions saying Iran is “wiped out militarily”.
“They are dead,” he adds.
