U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday condemned Iran’s drone attack on a cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz, describing it as a “foolish” violation of the ceasefire agreement that halted the Middle East war.

Trump confirmed on his Truth Social platform that Iran had launched “at least four One Way Attack Drones at Ships transversing the Strait of Hormuz”. “One of the Drones solidly hit the upper deck of a large and very expensive Cargo Carrying Ship” while three others were shot down, he wrote. “Obviously, this is a foolish violation of our Ceasefire Agreement,” Trump added.

The attack occurred Thursday when a cargo vessel was struck by an unknown projectile approximately 7.5 nautical miles off Oman’s coast, causing damage to the bridge but no casualties, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO). The incident prompted the U.N.’s International Maritime Organization to suspend its evacuation efforts for some 600 ships and 11,000 sailors trapped in the Gulf by the conflict.

The war was launched by the U.S. and Israel on Feb. 28, with a ceasefire taking effect on April 8. However, sporadic violence, including attacks on ships by Iranian forces and U.S. strikes on Iran, has continued in the Gulf region.
