Toyota has announced that it will invest $13.6 billion in manufacturing electric automobile batteries in the United States by 2025.
“This investment will help usher in more affordable electrified vehicles for U.S. consumers, significantly reduce carbon emissions, and importantly, create even more American jobs tied to the future of mobility,” said Ted Ogawa, CEO of Toyota Motor North America, as reported by arstechnica.com.
Though Toyota has sold more than 18.7 million Prius hybrids since 1997, other manufactures have taken the lead in selling battery-powered autos.
Toyota’s plans call for introducing a RAV4-sized crossover called the bZ4x in mid-2022.
Toyota has not announced where it will build its battery factory in the United States.
While it is not known how many batteries will be manufactured by Toyota annually, it was announced that the plant will employ a staff of 1,750.
