Tories crash to new postwar low

With tonight’s results in Kingswood and Wellingborough, this Conservative government is now the worst performing Tory administration in by-elections since the Second World War.

The record was previously held by the 1992 to 1997 parliament headed by Sir John Major, when the Tories lost eight seats in by-elections.

After losing both Kingswood and Wellingborough, the Tories have now lost a net of nine seats since 2019.

The worst performing government since 1945 is the Labour administration that was in office between 1966 and 1970, which lost 15 seats.

Since 2019, the Conservatives have now lost 10 by-elections – but has also gained one seat, brining it to a net loss of nine.
