‘Thank you for never supporting us’ – Restaurant takes swipe at locals after closure

A restaurant in north London has hit out at “indifferent” locals for causing it to permanently close.

Don Ciccio in Highgate said it had been forced to shut after six years due to a “lack of customers”.

“To the community of Highgate and its neighbours – thank you for never supporting us, not even once,” it said in a message on its website.

”To those we served during lockdown, when we were the only restaurant open, thank you for never visiting us once the pandemic ended.”

It complained that it “wasn’t enough” to be a Traveller’s Choice on Trip Advisor, or to hold a 4.7 stars rating on Google.

“We may be the first Italian restaurant to close… Not for the bad food, bad reviews, or bad luck – but for the sheer indifference of our neighbours,” it added.

“We’ll simply say: addio.”

The hospitality industry has suffered in recent years as costs continue to rise and household budgets remain squeezed.

Several big names on the London restaurant scene have closed this year, including Tom Brown’s Pearly Queen, Lyle’s in Shoreditch and Locanda Locatelli in Marylebone.

Don Ciccio isn’t the first to hit back at customers either – the upscale Mangal 2 Restaurant vented its frustrations with rude diners, blaming them for the “death of hospitality”.
