Students can improve academic levels by quitting social media, survey finds

By devoting less time to Facebook and other social networking sites, students with below-average grades could boost their results, says a recent study.

The study, led by Dr James Wakefield from the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), looked at the amount of time first-year university students spent on Facebook, and the impact it had on their grades.

The research showed that while high achieving students were not affected by the amount of time on Facebook, below-average students had significantly lower grades with greater Facebook use.

“Our research shows time spent on social networking platforms puts lower academic achievers at higher risk of failing their course,” said Dr Wakefield.

Students taking part in the study spent on average nearly two hours a day on Facebook, however, some were on the social networking site in excess of eight hours a day.

“Lower achieving students may already be grappling with self-regulation and focus, so it seems time spent on Facebook provides a further distraction from studies,” Dr Wakefield said.

“We found that if they used Facebook for three hours a day — not substantially higher than the average of just under two hours — the difference was around six marks in a 60 mark exam or 10%,” added Dr Wakefield.

The research, recently published in — Computers and Education — with co-author Dr Jessica Frawley from the University of Sydney, aims to help Quitting Facebook can escalate exam results below average students better understand the impact of social networking use on a student’s educational achievement.

While the research applies to university students studying STEM and business degrees, it is likely to also be relevant to high school students who use social media.

More than 500 students enrolled in the first year subject ‘Introductory Accounting’ at an Australian university took part in the study, with an average age of 19.

Researchers assessed the students’ general academic achievement using their weighted average mark (WAM) across all of their studies and surveyed them about their Facebook use.

They also controlled for other factors that might influence their achievements, such as whether they were planning to major in accounting, as well as their age and gender.

“Unlike other research on social networking use, we were able to tease out the differing impact on above-average students compared to below-average students,” Dr Wakefield said.

“It appears that for students with lower academic achievement, the use of social networking sites replaces study time, whereas high achieving students are able to juggle both,” he said.

Dr Wakefield says students with below-average grades would benefit from switching off notifications on their phones, and either quitting or reducing time spent on Facebook.

“Try to get into a mode where you can study without looking at your phone or logging on to social networking sites,” he suggested.

Dr Wakefield also recommended educators avoid using social networking sites to communicate with students regarding assignments and learning activities.

“Some educators have embraced sites such as Facebook as a tool for engagement, learning and group assignments,” said Dr Wakefield.

“However our research suggests educators should use Facebook only for a specific purpose, rather than to communicate with students more generally,” he said.

The research also looked at why students were using Facebook — whether to keep in touch with family and friends, for entertainment or for study purposes.

However, even when students used Facebook primarily for educational purposes, it was still a problem for lower-performing students.

Best study habits you need now

Regarding specific methods for employing good study habits, one method is to know what one is about to learn. For example, in the case of textbooks, the student should flip through the entire portion to be studied, and read each of the chapter titles and section titles. If the textbook provides questions at the end of a section, these should be read prior to reading the section. This way the student knows what issues to heed, and can analyze them as they appear.

After reading the section, the student can test comprehension by answering provided questions without turning back to the appropriate pages.

If vocabulary terms are provided, the student should try to jot down some facts from the reading that pertain to the vocabulary. All this work should be written down in an organized fashion, which creates a study review guide for the student to follow at a later time.

Some reading material is not in textbook form, such as literary novels, essays, or scientific reports. Highlighting key information can be useful, though students often forget exactly why they had highlighted a certain passage. In this case, it may be helpful write marginalia next to the highlighted text, noting connections to other important ideas, or simply reactions one has to the text.

A similar method can be used with borrowed books that cannot be marked. Post-its can be written on and placed on the appropriate pages of the original text. A particularly good study habit is to use an organized Post-it system wherein each Post-it features a group of related pieces of information. For example, one might have a Post-it titled, “Important People”, followed by a short list of these people. Then separate Post-its can be devoted to each person providing more detailed information. The Post-it method is a particularly useful strategy in employing good study habits because these Post-its can later be transferred to a separate piece of paper creating a study guide.

Other good study habits include partnered and group study sessions. Through these methods students can share ideas, and help each other expand upon the material. In addition, when one student teaches another student a piece of information, this indicates that he or she already has a firm understanding of that material, and has committed the information to memory.

When faced with a particularly large amount of study material, students may choose to divide the information among them, and rely on each of their study-mates to deliver a comprehensive report of their assigned information. This is not a bad study habit, however, each student should read all of the material, and be familiar with the issues that their study-mates may be presenting. This way the reports given by each study-mate will be a review for each student, rather than presenting information with which the student is completely unfamiliar. Furthermore, if the material is presented in linear progression, students may not understand their own portions of the material without reading what came before it.

Indian students arrested for studying in a fake US university

India has made a diplomatic protest to the US after 129 Indian students were arrested for enrolling in a fake university.

The University of Farmington, advertised as based in Michigan state, was run by undercover agents from the Department of Homeland Security to expose “pay-to-stay” immigration fraud.

Prosecutors say those who enrolled knew that the facility would be illegal.

However, Indian officials say the students may have been duped.

On Saturday, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued the protest to the US embassy in Delhi, expressing concern over the arrests and demanding consular access to those detained.

“Our concern over the dignity and well-being of the detained students and the need for immediate consular access for Indian officials to the detainees was reiterated,” the ministry said.

How were students lured?

The fake university was set up in 2015 to try to catch foreign nationals who had initially traveled to the US on student visas and wanted to stay in the country, US media reported.

A website for the University of Farmington showed pictures of students in classes and libraries, or relaxing around a grassy campus.

It advertised tuition for undergraduates at $8,500 (£6,500) a year and $11,000 a year for graduate students. It also had a fake Facebook page with a calendar of events.

But court papers released last week showed that the employees of the University of Farmington were undercover agents for the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE).

The “campus” was an office at a business park in a Detroit suburb.

A total of 130 students – including 129 from India – were arrested on Wednesday and charged with civil immigration charges, the Detroit Free Press reported.

The students face possible deportation if convicted.

Separately, eight people who allegedly acted as recruiters were charged with conspiracy to commit visa fraud and “harboring aliens for profit”.

The Indian government said the students could have been tricked into enrolling.

“We have urged the US side to share full details and regular updates of the students with the government, to release them from detention at the earliest and not to resort to deportation against their will,” MEA added.

Workplace raids have led to hundreds of arrests.

In two massive operations last year, ICE agents detained 146 people at a meat supplier in Ohio and another 150 at a trailer manufacturer in Texas.

Teaching is unarguably one of the most important professions in human history; it plays crucial roles in shaping the human mind and helps people discover their inner selves. A good teacher is always organised, good-looking, humane, cheerful, time-conscious, and inspiring, among other numerous distinguishing attributes. Yet, discovering the charming sides of this lofty profession takes more than mere wishes.

Although it is hard to be perfect for everyone, these are some of the ways teachers can endear themselves to many of their students:

Teach them how to be independent: Students enjoy learning and often want to show their knowledge, growth, and capabilities. Giving students a chance to display their skills instils confidence in them and strengthens their trust in a teacher. In addition, teachers are most appreciated when they challenge students with independent-thinking problems, and in some situations, offer guides that encourage kids to improve their learning skills.

Learn from the students: A good teacher is not assertive. He or she should understand that students are humans who undergo the same stress, depressive moods, bad days, and temperaments like adults. These problems can be a result of academic challenges, family issues or psychological problems.

Good teachers employ close observation on all students. Where some of them showed signs of poor academic performance and are giving up on education, the teacher should desist from provocative arguments. Showing understanding for their laziness or slow learning abilities eventually inspire them to greatness.

Be like a parent to them. Show them support by inquiring about their personal problems and offer help. If they feel depressed for undisclosed reasons, try having a private conversation after classes to know what solutions might be helpful.

Know your limits: Students love cheerful, humorous, and outgoing teachers but professionalism demands that you know your limits as a friend and teacher. Listen to them, help them with academic works, share ideas with them, but always know who you are because good relationships often go awry when teachers start behaving like students.

In a situation where a teacher handles adults or teenagers who are nearly the same age bracket, he or she must avoid use of slang. Engaging in rude and unprofessional discussions leads to loss of reputation and eventually, students start taking you for granted.

Teachers are more effective when they study students to know their life experiences, talents and needs, which are sometimes special. It would be nearly impossible to push a kid to greatness if you do not know his/her challenges. Therefore, charming teachers should exude purpose and passion. 5 Qualities every Child wants from Teachers

Embracing teaching as a career guarantees a life of arduous toil. But working with children is one of the highly demanding jobs which endlessly test one’s reasoning, temperament, attitude and personality.

A large number of teachers hate their jobs except for the commensurate salaries and other fringe benefits that come with it.

However, it’s no exaggeration to state here that an unfriendly working condition, lack of experience, negative personality traits and poor remuneration, jointly promote inefficiency among employees, especially in an environment where management is short-sighted and teachers are ignorant of which qualities every child wants.

Teachers deserve financial/job security as part of their motivation needs; school management desires an all-rounded growth for every child, teamwork among staff, and lax government policies to achieve its long/short-term goals; but in truth, children and their parents, by extension, suffer like the grass on which two elephants chose to battle.

Here are some qualities every child or parent wants from teachers:

NEUTRALITY: A teacher should understand that taking care of a group of children from different family backgrounds demands great wisdom. Every child wants to feel loved, and be loved in the true sense of the word. Some times, the desperation for love comes with a tinge of jealousy for “losers,” but a wise teacher knows how to equally share love, kindness, and attention among children.

Over-pampering a child attracts envy from others who feel unloved or desire such level of special treatments. This negative attitude from a teacher also breeds stubbornness in favored kids.

Although parents desire the best for their wards, none would ever wish for his/her child to become a subject of hate and corrosive jealousy.

My Advice: Avoid having any form of preference for your students, and always treat every child with the same measure.

HONESTY: Anyone who spends time with kids must have realized that they have elephant memories and are very good at spotting lies. A teacher must learn how to keep promises, keep to agreements, and serve as a good example to children.

To earn your respect from kids, do not deviate from your threats of punishment or promise of rewards. Proven integrity builds trust in teachers no matter the pain or joy felt by a child because they eventually get to understand and appreciate your incorruptibility.

My Advice: Students are very good at politicking, and for sure, they’ll try to impair your moral values through different strategies but you must let them know that word is bond.

Better still, don’t make rules if you’re so not strict to mete out punishments. Delegate such responsibilities to an assistant, or make it clear that defaulters will be referred to a higher authority.

PUNCTUALITY: Students know when you’re late to work, even before they learn about time. Their retentive memories make them a bunch of accurate time-keepers by mere sight – unless there’s no clock hanging on the wall.

Lateness is often understood by children as carelessness and lack of affection from teachers.

Punctuality isn’t only necessary during lessons or meetings; it should be applicable to nap time, lunch time, snack time etc.

My Advice: Students will always appreciate seeing you wait around before it’s time. If you wish to lose their attention and respect, try being late a few times.

HUMOR: Most academic institutions and recruiters look out for First Class certificate holders before sending out invitations for interviews without taking into consideration the fact that an equally smart teacher may have graduated with a Second Class Lower or Third-Class degree due to some reasons. A child’s educational development isn’t only about academics and moral ethics; games and humor play major roles in actualizing an all-rounded knowledge.

Show me a teacher who combines humor and games during lessons, and I’ll show you students who’d rather stay hungry in school than eat exotic meals elsewhere.

Having a great sense of humor makes teachers lovable. It is the key to instilling passion for classroom lessons among students.

My Advice: Use competitive group games during classes to foster close interaction among children. Individual games also help in promoting independent thinking and critical reasoning, but applying some nerve-calming humor tends to reduce learning difficulties.

PATIENCE: Teaching isn’t a job for quick-tempered persons; it’s for the meek at heart. Just like our aged parents, kids hate irascible persons and would give anything to stay far away from such teachers no matter what qualifications and experience you’ve obtained or your country of origin.

Children are all special in their own ways; they learn in unique ways and at their own pace, so wise teachers do not compare kids’ abilities.

No student should be judged based on his/her learning skills, instead, helping such kids discover their innate skills and nurturing them to greatness is the calling of every dedicated tutor.

My Advice: Every choleric teacher who has love for children should first consider going for a rehabilitation therapy. Kids can’t be forced to learn, and anger widens the relationship gap between educators and students.

A nightclub named KASBAH has been called out by the UK authorities for handing out potentially unsafe condoms to undergraduates in Hillfields area of Coventry.

According to reports, the endangered young people who received those Greek gifts were said to be celebrating fresher’s week at the University of Warwick and Coventry University.

Promoters who worked for the nightclub were seen urging university students to pick uf their free condoms and “get some lovin”.

The city’s health chiefs were said to have advised anyone who received those rubbers not to use them.

Kasbah’s condoms did not feature any of the required safety markings, and could fail – leaving anyone who uses them at risk of STIs or pregnancy, Metro quotes health officers as saying.

There are visible proofs to show that those condoms are doomed to disappoint anyone who dares.

In line UK’s regulations on all contraception, expiry dates and batch numbers must be clearly written on the products, but these are lacking on Kasbah’s condoms. Also, there are no British Standards Kitemark or CE European Standards mark which are both required by law.

In response to the alleged consumer risk, The Kasbah Nightclub has argued that their condoms which surprisingly have “not recommended for use” written on them in tiny print, were safe.

The distributor says they sourced their gifts from a reputable manufacturer.

A local councillor named Damian Gannon joined the long list of people who have openly criticised Kasbah for risking people’s lives. He posted on Twitter:

“This is incredibly irresponsible,” he tweeted. “How on earth does this promote licensing objectives?”

Kasbah has now backtracked from its earlier arguments, saying: ‘They are a novelty item given out for promotional purposes and clearly state “not recommended for use” most uni students can read.’

“Lick Me Where I Fart,” Teacher Tells Student.

A female teacher who allegedly told her student “lick me where I fart”, has been placed on suspension after her dehumanizing classroom slangs were made public. Many of the victimized students testified against this teacher from Ontario, Canada.

Jennifer Elizabeth Green-Johnson, has verbally abused her students over the years. She handles grade levels 10 – 12 at Dunnville Secondary School.

The bad-mouthing teacher was arrested nearly one month ago and has since been held in custody without pay. She is set to attend a disciplinary hearing on September 23.

According to the Discipline Committee of the Ontario College of Teachers, Jennifer will be investigated for these offences committed during the 2015/16 academic year:

  • Telling a student: “Get that fu–ing thing out of here.”
  • “Why don’t you lick me where I fart,” she told a student that was chewing gum in the classroom.
  • Calling one of her students a “bloody pedophile”.
  • Told a student: “I’ve never told a student this before but f–k you!”
  • Said to the class: “It’s debate, not masturbate.”

The report from US Magazine says Jennifer has once appeared before Dunnville Secondary School’s discipline committee for similar vulgar expressions.

The educator was issued a suspension in January, 2016 for allegedly telling a male student: “So you like it from behind?” She made the comment after witnessing the abused child wrestle with another student in her classroom, an allegation he pleaded “no contest”.

Meanwhle students and parents who took part in Rate My Teachers  [a Canadian website] has mixed feelings. Opinions are surprisingly divided between the yeahs and nays.

One of the parents who rated Jennifer 5 out of 5 joked: “Any teacher who tells a student to lick me where I fart is awesome. Transfering my kid today.

“Good luck ma’am and thanks for teaching these kids how the real world conversations go when they get a job!”

Another parent who also rated the teacher 5 out of 5 wrote: “She has her own sttle of teaching.”

Another commenter wrote: “Ugly person, both inside and out.”

One of the students wrote this about Jennifer way back in May, 2005: “I think you need to revise your teaching methods; laughing and passing notes during people’s presentations.

“What are you, a child? You are the most unprofessional person I have ever met.”

Also in 2004, one of her students wrote: “Miss Green Johnson you need to grow up, you act like you’re a student, snubbing the kids you think aren’t ‘cool,’ you succeed in making students feel stupid, thanx.”

Lol! No, seriously, I’d rather save the laughter.

Jennifer has many friends just as much as the number of enemies she has made for herself. Seems she has her flaws as a human being – that type that no discipline committee can change.

No other student said it better that this. “Green you were the best teacher ever. Those after school extra help really helped 😉 you would always satisfy my cravings with your lust,” the student wrote September 20, 2016. Whatever that means.

What School Kids Eat In China Will Surprise You.

Rice, noodles, pork, steamed bread, soup and filled dumplings are served to Chinese pupils in most private or public schools as the main menu, with little changes and some extras like fruits, juice or snacks.

There’s a big difference to what pupils eat for lunch in Chinese schools. However, it’ll be right to state here that the quality depends more on whether the school is private-owned or public.

Though the government funds free meals – breakfast, lunch and dinner – for pupils in public schools, it’s arguable that private schools have more to offer since parents pay through their noses for the meals.

Notwithstanding, some private school owners cut cost by offering fast foods as lunch.

Parents may choose to spend some extra money on quality meals if they’re not satisfied with food items provided in public or private schools.

No Homework Policy: Teacher In Texas Goes Viral For Her “Innovation”.

A teacher in Texas, USA has gone viral for her “no homework” policy. She believes her second-grade students will be perform better in their studies if they’re allowed more time to play and be with their families.

Although her arguments in defense of the policy has since attracted condemnation by some critics on the social media, there are quite a few parents who are commending her for the “innovation”.

Many parents believe the new policy will have a positive impact on the students as well as improve educational values.

Brandy Young is a the “famous” teacher from Godley Elementary School in Johnson County, Texas.

“Take what you’ve learned in the classroom and apply it outside of the classroom,” Young said. “That’s what I hope they’re doing with the learning that they get in my room.”

Her official notice on the “no homework” policy issued to parents has drawn media attention immediately it was posted on Facebook by one of the parents, Sarah Gallagher, noted KXAS-TV.

“After much research this summer, I am trying something new. Homework will only consist of work that your student did not finish during the school day. There will be no assigned homework this year,” said Young’s letter, which has been shared more than 72,000 times off Gallagher’s Facebook page.

“Research has been unable to prove that homework improves students’ performances. Rather, I ask that you spend your evenings doing things that are proven to correlate with student success. Eat dinner as a family, read together, play outside, and get your child to bed early.”

Gallagher said Facebook users from all over the world have contacted her about the letter, including Australia, Japan, Ireland, and countries in Africa, said WGN-TV.

Godley Independent School District Superintendent Rich Dear appeared to back Young, saying teachers there, southwest of Fort Worth, are encouraged to be innovative and that Young was putting her students first, said KXAS-TV.

Duke education professor Harris M. Cooper disagreed with Young’s view of homework, saying it was her job to make homework valuable to her students, said KXAS-TV.

“Make it relevant, make it fun and make it part of what kids want to do,” said Cooper, author of the book ‘The Battle Over Homework.’ “That’s her challenge, not cut it off entirely.”

Young told CBS News in an interview that the idea behind her policy was to help the children be more well-rounded students.

She said: “(Students) work hard all day.

“When they go home they have other things they need to learn there.

“I’m trying to develop their whole person; it’s not beneficial to go home and do pencil and paper work.”

Surprisingly, most parents agree with Young’s stand on the issue as shown in their Facebook comments.

India Police Arrest Students Who Threw Dog Off Roof.

Police in southern India have reportedly arrested two medical students after a video that showed one of them flinging a stray dog from the balcony of a two-storey building went viral. The video sparked public outrage around the world

One of the students as shown in the video, was smiling as he lifts the dog by the scruff of the neck to the ledge and finally tosses her over. The other student is thought to have filmed the incident.

An animal rights activist later found the dog injured but alive.

According to police, the students said during questioning that they threw the dog and filmed it “just for fun”.

Police in Tamil Nadu state arrested the pair, who are final-year students at a medical college in the state capital Chennai, and a local court on Wednesday granted them bail.

“The court has granted bail to the students. As per the bail order, they paid 10,000 rupees (S$200) each,” local police inspector, Frank D. Ruben, told AFP.

Police began searching for the students on Tuesday following a complaint filed by an activist from the government’s Animal Welfare Board of India.

Activist Shravan Krishnan found the dog and posted a photo on Instagram late Tuesday of him holding the injured animal, who has now been checked by a team of veterinarians.

One said the puppy had fractured her right leg but seemed otherwise unscathed by her ordeal.

“It seems to be a puppy of around five months old and presently the conditions and vital (statistics) seem ok,” said R. Jayaprakash.

Earlier, the Indian branch of the Humane Society International offered a reward of 100,000 rupees to anyone who could provide information for the students’ arrest.

Others called for stronger animal cruelty laws in the country.

In 2007, animal rights supporters created uproar when municipal workers in the southern Indian high-tech city of Bangalore culled thousands of street dogs after a child was mauled to death by a pack of neighborhood strays.
