‘Sunak bears huge culpability for his role in this debacle’

As we have reported, Rishi Sunak has come under fire today for halving the number of schools that could be rebuilt in the 2021 – when he was chancellor.

The prime minister reduced the number of school rebuilds from 100 a year to 50 a year, while the Department for Education was asking for 200.

It comes as the government confirmed dozens of school buildings will need to at least partially close due to the presence of unsafe concrete.

Bridget Phillipson, the shadow education secretary, said Mr Sunak “bears huge culpability for his role in this debacle”.

She added: “He doubled down on Michael Gove’s decision to axe Labour’s schools rebuilding programme and now the chickens have come home to roost – with yet more disruption to children’s education.

“Ministers need to come clean about the number of schools affected, what they knew, and when they knew, about the risks posed by RAAC so that parents can be reassured their children are safe at school.”
