It was just a few weeks ago that the government was touting falling inflation, interest rates set to drop, and rising consumer confidence – but then the US and Israel bombed Iran.
Beth Rigby asked the prime minister on Electoral Dysfunction podcast how he feels about the changing circumstances, and he replied: “Of course there’s a frustration there.”
And an improving economy created “the conditions in which we could then build”, so with war upending that, “of course there’s frustration with that”, he said.
But Sir Keir Starmer also argued that the UK economy was in a better place at the start of this war than when the Ukraine conflict started, so “the extent of the challenge we now face will depend on how long this war goes on, and that’s why we’ve got to de-escalate”.
However, he said there is “no point in me sort of complaining about it” because “that’s the world we live in”.
Asked if he occasionally goes into his office and swears, the PM admitted: “Well, occasionally.
“I keep my expletives to myself most of the time. Although I don’t think that’s even safe all the time.”
