South Carolina Lieutenant Governor Pamela Evette Pays Tribute to Lindsey Graham After His Sudden Death

COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA, July 15, 2026 — South Carolina Lieutenant Governor Pamela Evette has paid tribute to longtime U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham following his sudden death, describing the late Republican lawmaker as a dedicated public servant whose influence extended far beyond the state.

Graham, who represented South Carolina in the U.S. Senate for more than two decades, died at the age of 71 after a sudden medical emergency. His death prompted tributes from political leaders, colleagues and supporters across the United States.

Speaking about Graham’s legacy, Evette praised his decades of service and highlighted his commitment to representing South Carolina’s interests in Washington.

She described the appointment of Graham’s sister, Darline Graham Nordone, to temporarily fill his Senate seat as a meaningful tribute to the senator’s life and public service.

Evette said having someone from Graham’s own family continue his work was a fitting way to honour a politician who had built deep connections with South Carolina voters over many years.

“It is a wonderful tribute to his legacy,” Evette said while discussing the decision.

Graham’s death created an immediate political transition in South Carolina, with Governor Henry McMaster appointing Darline Graham Nordone as an interim replacement until a special election is held to determine who will complete the term.

Nordone, Graham’s younger sister, has a personal history closely connected to the senator. After their parents died when Graham was young, he helped raise her, a relationship that remained central throughout his life.

The temporary appointment has drawn attention nationally because Graham was a prominent Republican voice in the Senate and a close ally of former President Donald Trump. His departure has opened a competitive race for one of the Republican Party’s safest Senate seats.

Evette also praised Graham’s ability to build relationships across political circles while remaining committed to conservative priorities. She highlighted his work on national security, defence policy and foreign affairs, areas where he became one of the Senate’s most recognised voices.

Throughout his Senate career, Graham was known for his strong positions on issues including support for Israel, opposition to Iran’s regional influence and advocacy for Ukraine. His approach often made him a prominent figure in international policy debates.

His death has also triggered discussions about the future of Republican leadership in South Carolina. Several political figures are expected to compete for the seat in the upcoming special election, with the eventual winner likely to shape the state’s representation in Washington for years to come.

Evette said Graham’s legacy would continue through the people he represented and the policies he supported during his long career.

Supporters remembered Graham not only as a senator but also as a mentor and influential Republican figure who played a major role in shaping national political debates.

As South Carolina begins the process of selecting a permanent replacement, tributes continue to highlight Graham’s impact on the state, the Republican Party and American foreign policy.

For many of his colleagues, including Pamela Evette, the focus remains on honouring a political career defined by public service, loyalty to his constituents and a lasting commitment to the causes he championed.
