DOUBLE STANDARDS: Should you trust celebrities and social media influencers?

Don’t trust every word you hear from celebrities!

Malala Yousafzai received widespread recognition after she was shot in a school bus by a Taliban fighter. She was shifted to the UK for treatment after which, she survived. Later on, she became an activist and worked for promoting and spreading education to different sections and different classes of people in our society. While doing so, she has always been firm in her claim that Pakistan is a peaceful country which does not tolerate terrorism. It was the same country where she was shot, her motherland and yet, in the last 11 years since the accident, she never went back to Pakistan.

But no, that’s not her hypocrisy. In an interview with Vogue Magazine, Malala commented that she does not believe in marriage. She doesn’t feel the need for people to get married and there was no point in signing some random papers if two people wanted to stay together. She wanted to stay strong and be the face of feminism in society. This was June 2021.

Fast forward five months, she married Asser Malik, the General Manager of Pakistan Cricket Board in November 2021 and yes, she was seen “signing papers”. The same person who was against marriage and the need to sign an official document changes her opinion, goes completely against the statement she issued in the interview and gets married when she finds the “right man” to get married to! Such examples are why feminism has become a laughing stock in today’s society.
