SNP demands probe into missing messages – as minister says ‘nothing is being witheld’

Commons Leader Sir Alan Campbell has told MPs that “as far as anyone knows, nothing is being withheld” in the release of the Mandelson files.

It follows messages between Darren Jones, a top Sir Keir Starmer aide, and Peter Mandelson being leaked to The Spectator.

The embarrassing texts show Jones praised Mandelson and said he was “so sorry” to see Starmer fire him. He also repeatedly criticised then-Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds, who is now the government’s chief whip.

Asked in the Commons whether there are other messages yet to come out, Campbell replied: “Ministers, including the prime minister, have complied with the humble address by providing all the information that ministers hold and I think that’s the right thing for them to have done.

“As far as anyone knows, nothing is being withheld.”

It follows the SNP have called for a probe into missing messages, as they accused the government of a “cover-up”.

The party’s Westminster leader Dave Doogan said: “It’s now clear that the most senior members of the Labour government have failed to publish key messages with Lord Mandelson – and have failed to declare secret meetings with him and his lobbying firm Global Counsel.

“This isn’t just embarrassing for them, it looks like a clear breach of the ministerial code and UK lobbying laws – and it shows that Mandelson was pulling the strings of the Labour government.

“There must now be a full probe into why the Labour government ministers failed to publish their exchanges with Mandelson, and failed to declare meetings they held with him, his lobbying firm and clients.”

A short while ago, a spokesperson for the PM said: “We followed a rigorous process to publish [the Mandelson files] in the most transparent way possible and as much as possible.”

They also pointed journalists to the methodology notes of the Mandelson files.
