An Ethiopian sprinter Sintayehu Legese has emerged winner of the 2019 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon.
He crossed the finish line at 2:17 hrs.
The race started at 7 a.m. on Saturday with new records expected from a long list of elite athletes at the National Stadium, Surulere. Participants from USA, Australia, Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia and Morocco were seen at the event. Media reports confirm the top prize is $50,000.
Before the kick-off, Yussuf Alli, who holds position as Access Bank Lagos City general manager, said he was optimistic that the quality of athletes on the start list would provide an unprecedented race time.
Herpa Almenesh Guta, an Ethiopian athlete who won the 2018 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon (women’s race), was also at this year’s star-studded event.
Despite Legese’s (2:17 hrs) triumph at the 2019 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, Frenchman Abraham Kiptrotich holds the course record with 2:13:04 secs while Rodah Jepkorir remains unbeaten for women–with a time of 2:37:52 secs.
