The UK defence secretary has called Ukraine’s overnight attack in the Black Sea an “historic moment”.
The “destruction” of key vessels there shows Russia can “no longer exercise safely” in the waters, said Grant Shapps.
This is the first reference to “destruction” since Kyiv said it had hit two landing ships and a communications centre in strikes.
“This is an historic moment for Ukraine and a further shift in Black Sea dynamics,” said Mr Shapps.
“After years of illegal Russian control over Crimea, the destruction of these key Russian vessels marks a significant milestone.
“In plain English, it means that Putin can no longer exercise safely in the Black Sea, even though the Russian Fleet has operated there since 1783.”
