DAKAR, July 13, 2026 — The Senegal Football Federation (FSF) has ended its relationship with head coach Pape Thiaw following the national team’s disappointing exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The decision came after Senegal were eliminated in the early knockout stage of the tournament, despite entering the competition with high expectations following a strong run in recent international football.
Thiaw, who guided Senegal through qualification for the World Cup, was dismissed along with members of his technical team as the federation begins preparations for a new direction ahead of future competitions.
The Senegalese side had shown flashes of quality during the tournament but struggled to meet expectations, with their campaign ending after a dramatic defeat in the knockout rounds.
The federation said the decision followed an assessment of the team’s performance and broader considerations regarding the future of Senegalese football. FSF President Abdoulaye Fall is expected to provide further explanations about the move during a press conference.
Thiaw’s departure marks the end of a short but significant spell in charge of the national team. During his tenure, he helped maintain Senegal’s status as one of Africa’s strongest football nations and led the team to major international competitions.
However, criticism increased after Senegal failed to make a deep run at the World Cup, with fans and football observers questioning tactical decisions and the team’s overall performance during the tournament.
The coaching change leaves Senegal searching for a new manager capable of guiding the team through the next phase of development while maintaining the competitive standards established in recent years.
The national team has enjoyed a successful period in African football, including continental success and consistent appearances at major international tournaments, making the appointment of Thiaw’s successor a major decision for the federation.
Attention will now turn to the search for a new coach as Senegal prepares for upcoming international fixtures and begins rebuilding ahead of future challenges.
