Some Russian officials have proposed more anti-migrant policies in response to the Crocus City Hall attack, according to military analysts.
The Institute for the Study of War cited comments from Vladimir Putin ally Mikhail Sheremet, who said Russia should “limit the entry of migrants into Russia” and that the West was targeting migrants in the country to conduct terrorist attacks.
He also said Russia was not capable of determining which migrants have “good intentions” as its efforts are primarily focused on the war.
Vladislav Davankov, who ran in the Russian presidential election, also suggested harsher measures against migrants including a “zero tolerance” policy for those who commit a crime during their first year in Russia.
He also said Russia should have “digital control” over migrants.
The US-based ISW said Russia’s anti-migrant policies and an “increasingly ultranationalist Kremlin” are “likely further alienating migrant communities and generating animosities that Salafi-Jihadi groups can exploit in recruitment efforts”.
