Russian bombers patrol over Sea of Japan

Two Russian strategic bombers have carried out a seven-hour flight over the Sea of Japan, accompanied by Su-35 fighter jets, Russia’s defence ministry has said.

The flight was “carried out in strict accordance with international rules for using airspace,” Sergei Kobylash, a long-range aviation commander, said.

“Long-range aviation pilots regularly carry out flights over the neutral waters of the Arctic, North Atlantic, Black and Baltic Seas, and Pacific Ocean,” Mr Kobylash added.

For context: This is not the first time Russian bombers have been spotted over the Sea of Japan.

In May last year, Chinese and Russian strategic bombers flew over the Sea of Japan as Joe Biden attended a Quad summit in Tokyo.

And then a few months later in August, Russia’s defence ministry said two strategic bombers had patrolled the sea again as South Korea’s military said that Russian warplanes entered its air defence identification zone (ADIZ).
