The Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, has ordered the immediate removal of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Oyigbo Division following allegations of extortion and professional misconduct.

The decision was announced after reports surfaced accusing officers attached to the division of engaging in unethical practices, including the unlawful collection of money from members of the public. The allegations sparked public concern and prompted an internal review by the state police command.

Confirming the development, the Rivers State Police Command said the action forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen discipline within the force and uphold professional standards among officers and personnel.

According to the command, the Commissioner of Police viewed the allegations seriously and directed immediate administrative measures pending the outcome of further investigations.

“The Commissioner of Police has ordered the immediate removal of the DPO from the division pending a thorough investigation into the allegations,” the command stated.

Police authorities stressed that the command would not tolerate any act capable of undermining public confidence in law enforcement agencies. The statement reiterated that officers found guilty of misconduct, extortion, abuse of office, or other unethical behaviour would face appropriate disciplinary actions in line with existing regulations.

The command also assured residents that the matter would be investigated transparently and that anyone found culpable would be held accountable.

“The Rivers State Police Command remains committed to professionalism, accountability, and respect for the rights of citizens. Any officer found wanting will be sanctioned accordingly,” the statement added.
