Putin to visit NATO member as hopes grow for revival of Black Sea grain deal

Vladimir Putin will travel to Turkey to meet the president as the NATO member tries to persuade Russia to return to the Black Sea grain deal.

The deal ensured the safe export of Ukrainian grain during the war via the Black Sea before Russia unilaterally withdrew in July.

A date for the Russian leader and Recep Tayyip Erdogan to meet has not yet been confirmed, but a Turkish official told Reuters last week Mr Putin would visit Turkey on 12 February.

Speaking at a news conference in the Maltese capital Valletta, Turkey’s foreign minister Hakan Fidan today said Turkey was working with Ukraine and Russia to revive the accord.

“We have always stood by Ukraine’s territorial integrity and will continue to stand by it, but the destructive impact of the war must end somehow too.”

Turkey shares a maritime border with Ukraine and Russia in the Black Sea and has aimed to maintain good ties with both.

It has provided military support for Kyiv while opposing the sanctions on Russia.
