Kylian Mbappe faces a late fitness test after suffering an injury in training ahead of Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League clash with Real Madrid on Wednesday.
With a slender 1-0 lead from the first game, PSG will look to eliminate Carlo Ancelotti’s side to reach the quarter-finals.
However, their preparations have taken a hit with the news that Mbappe sustained a knock to his left foot in training, courtesy of a heavy challenge from teammate Idrissa Gueye. The Frenchman had already missed PSG’s 1-0 loss to Nice at the weekend.
The French giants revealed that initial treatment suggested the injury was not too bad, but he will face a final test on the eve of the huge match in the Spanish capital.
In a statement, PSG said: “Kylian Mbappé suffered a shock on the left foot in training today. He underwent treatment this afternoon.
“The clinical examination is reassuring and a new test will be taken in 24 hours.”
The World Cup winner suffered a similar blow in last season’s Champions League, when he picked up a calf injury and was forced to watch from the sidelines as PSG were eliminated by Manchester City in their semi-final second leg.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side were brilliant in the first leg, winning thanks to Mbappe’s 93rd-minute strike, but it would be a huge blow if he were unable to face the team he is widely expected to join in the summer.
As for Real, Ferland Mendy and Casemiro are both suspended, while Toni Kroos is sidelined due to injury. That means a largely untested midfield three of Federico Valverde, Eduardo Camavinga and Luka Modric could be deployed, with elder statesman Marcelo expected to deputise at left back.
