The Philipps University, founded in 1527, offers award-winning teaching for around 22,000 students and addresses the pressing challenges of our time through excellent research across a broad spectrum of disciplines.

The Faculty of Medicine and the University Hospital of Giessen and Marburg GmbH, Marburg site, are seeking to fill a

Professorship (W3) in Laboratory Medicine

at the Institute of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiochemistry, Molecular Diagnostics for the summer semester of 2027.

The professorship covers the field of laboratory medicine in research, teaching, and patient care, and includes the directorate of the institute at both sites. Research laboratories are provided in Marburg, and teaching takes place at both Philipps University of Marburg and Justus Liebig University Giessen. Patient care at the Marburg and Giessen sites is provided through coordinated services and medical themes.

Both sites are equipped with a medical care center (MVZ). Close collaboration with the institutes of microbiology, virology, human genetics, transfusion medicine, pharmacology, and other clinical disciplines that utilize laboratory services is expected. The focus will be on the strategic advancement of diagnostic services through the integration of innovative methods, the digitalization and automation of laboratory processes, and the further development of data-driven decision support in patient care. This also includes contributing to transparent and sustainable economic management of diagnostic care.

In terms of research, the professorship is expected to contribute to the research focus inflammation / infection and / or cancer research, and to support the Faculty’s efforts to establish a profile in the field of epithelial inflammation. This requires close collaboration with existing research groups, institutes, and clinical department — in particular TRR 425 “Desmosomal Dysfunction in Epithelial Barriers,” GRK 2573“The Inflammatory Tumor Secretome,” and/or the German Center for Lung Research (DZL). Furthermore, the professorship is expected to play a particularly active role in securing competitive external funding and to contribute to the establishment of new research initiatives of the Faculty and the Philipps University.

The responsibilities associated with the professorship include a strong commitment to teaching, as well as participation in curriculum development (including the continued implementation of the National Competence-Based Learning Objectives Catalog for Medicine, NKLM) and in interdisciplinary teaching projects. Active participation in programs to promote young talents and the Clinician Scientist Program of the Faculty of Medicine is also expected.

The appointment is made as a civil servant. The responsibilities associated with patient care duties and the clinical directorate are governed by a chief physician contract with university hospital Marburg (UKGM GmbH).

The universities of Giessen and Marburg, together with the Technical University of Central Hesse, have established the Central Hesse Research Campus. Within this framework, the two medical faculties practice a structured collaboration based on coordinated priorities. Accordingly, candidates are expected to be willing to cooperate across universities and departments in campus priorities and profile areas, as well as to participate in collaborative projects. In particular, cross-site, patient-oriented clinical research and participation in joint clinical trials are required.

The employment requirements of Sections 67 and 68 of the Hessian Higher Education Act (HessHG) apply.

The requirements for appointment include a completed university degree in human medicine, certification as a specialist in laboratory medicine, teaching aptitude, a doctoral degree, and, in addition, academic achievements demonstrated by a habilitation or equivalent qualifications, or achieved in the context of a junior professorship. The requirements for obtaining the specialty-specific training authorization must be met.
