Harry and Meghan

Prince Harry wins first tabloid battle – but it’s not yet over

If taking on the tabloid press is Harry’s “life’s work”, he’s just won round one.

This judgment rules that Prince Harry is a victim of phone hacking. It also found hacking was widespread and known about by senior executives.

But what will perhaps be more important to Harry is the judge’s finding about Piers Morgan.

The judge says editors like Morgan “clearly knew about or were involved in unlawful information gathering”.

This will be particularly welcomed by Harry, who claims he and Meghan have faced a “barrage of horrific personal attacks and intimidation” from Morgan as a result of the claim.

And Harry’s statement makes it clear he now wants the police to investigate.

While giving evidence, Harry said he would feel “some injustice” if his claim was unsuccessful.

His phone wasn’t hacked as much as he claimed, but wins on nearly half of the articles still amounts to a significant victory.

He’s won a large chunk of the case, but whether it changes public opinion on him or his mission against the media is less clear.

But with two more cases against newspaper groups ongoing, the end of Harry’s statement says it all: “The mission continues.”
