UMUAHIA, July 9, 2026 — Political tension has reportedly emerged among communities in Abia State’s oil-producing areas following disagreements over the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket for a House of Representatives seat ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The dispute is linked to competing interests among stakeholders from communities within the Ukwa East/Ukwa West Federal Constituency, where different groups have expressed strong opinions over the zoning and allocation of the APC ticket.
The controversy has highlighted long-standing political expectations among oil-producing communities in the area, with some residents arguing that fairness and equity should guide the selection of candidates for the constituency’s representative position.
Communities Divided Over Candidate Selection
Some stakeholders from Ukwa West have welcomed the emergence of their preferred candidate, arguing that their area deserves consideration after what they described as years of political imbalance in the constituency.
The Asa Development Union, the umbrella body representing Asa people in Ukwa West, reportedly commended the decision to select Sam Nwogu as the APC candidate for the House of Representatives seat, describing it as recognition of the community’s political interests.
The group argued that the position had historically been occupied by representatives from another part of the constituency and that the latest development represented an opportunity for wider inclusion.
However, the development has also generated opposition among some stakeholders who believe the process should involve broader consultation and respect existing political arrangements within the constituency.
APC Faces Internal Disputes Over Candidate Changes
The controversy comes amid wider disagreements within the APC over changes to some National Assembly candidates submitted by the party leadership. In Abia, the party’s national leadership reportedly altered some names on its candidate list, a move that created disagreements between national and state party structures.
The Abia APC chapter challenged the revised list and maintained its own position on some candidates, reflecting deeper internal disagreements over control of the party’s electoral structure.
Political observers say disputes over candidate selection are becoming increasingly common as parties prepare for the 2027 elections, with zoning arrangements, local influence and party loyalty playing major roles in determining who receives nominations.
Calls for Unity and Transparency
Stakeholders have urged APC leaders in Abia to resolve the disagreement through dialogue and ensure that the final candidate selection process reflects the interests of the people.
Community leaders and party members have warned that prolonged internal conflict could weaken the party’s chances in the constituency and create divisions among supporters ahead of the election.
The dispute adds to growing political activity in Abia as parties intensify preparations for the 2027 elections. With several groups seeking greater representation, analysts say managing internal disagreements will be critical for political parties seeking electoral success.
