Poland Summons Russian Ambassador After Missile Lands on Its Territory

Warsaw confirms the projectile was a Russian Kh-101 cruise missile and demands an end to “hostile actions” endangering citizens.

WARSAW — Poland summoned the Russian ambassador on Friday and handed him a formal protest note after a Russian missile landed on Polish territory, the country’s foreign ministry said.

The incident, which occurred in eastern Poland on Thursday, marks the latest in a series of airspace violations on NATO’s eastern flank that have heightened fears of the war in Ukraine spilling over into the alliance’s borders.

Warsaw confirmed on Friday that the projectile was a Russian Kh-101 cruise missile. Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz said the missile was produced near Moscow in the second quarter of this year, indicating that Russia is using newly manufactured weapons to strike Ukraine. “It confirms reports that Russian wartime stockpiles have been depleted,” he wrote on X.

‘We Demand an End to Hostile Actions’

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maciej Wewior told reporters that Poland had conveyed its “unequivocal condemnation of hostile actions directed against the security of a sovereign state and its citizens”.

“We demand an end to actions that endanger the lives and safety of citizens and, at the same time, pose a risk of an aviation disaster,” Wewior said.

The Russian embassy in Warsaw did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The incident adds to growing tensions between NATO and Russia, as the alliance’s eastern member states have repeatedly reported airspace breaches and drone debris entering their territories amid Moscow’s ongoing offensive against Ukraine.
