The Prime Minister says Icelanders can contribute to security matters by providing funding to the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and by serving as a host nation for other countries. That, she says, yields better results than establishing an army.
Kristrún Frostadóttir, Prime Minister, says she does not believe Icelanders will establish an army in her lifetime.
She answered questions from conference guests today at the Arctic Circle Assembly in Reykjavík.
“In all honesty, and although I cannot speak for the entire Icelandic nation, I think everyone is satisfied with the current situation regarding our presence and security. The government is as well,” Kristrún said.
The website of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs says,
Since 2006, Iceland’s direct contribution to NATO activities in the form of so-called host nation support has increased. [it] Mainly consists of providing deployable allied forces, which perform various tasks in air surveillance, submarine monitoring and defence exercises, with facilities such as food and accommodation.
